According to legend, the goddess Sati (Dakshayani), the consort of Lord Shiva, married him against the wishes of her father, King Daksha. To insult Shiva, King Daksha organized a grand yajna (fire sacrifice) but deliberately did not invite the divine couple. Despite Shiva’s advice, an enraged Sati attended the ceremony. There, Daksha publicly humiliated Shiva. Unable to bear the insult to her husband, Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire.
