Her heart skipped. The voice was soft, synthetic, but warm—like an old friend you’d forgotten you’d left behind.
The world went white.
When her vision returned, she was standing on the bridge of a starship—not one from the game files, but a real bridge, with real gravity and real starlight pouring through a cracked viewport. Beside her stood a hologram of a young woman with kind eyes and static at the edges of her form.
Cleo tapped her fingernail against the side of her monitor, watching the hexadecimal ghosts scroll backward in the terminal window. Around her, the LAN party hummed with the sound of twenty other modders trying to crack the same impossible game: Starless Expanse , a notorious “brick-proof” space sim that had eaten three of her friends’ graphics cards already. Cleo looked around the room. Her friends were staring at her, terrified. One of them mouthed, “What did you do?”
Cleo’s hands flew across the keyboard. She tried to isolate the mod, to roll back to 1.0.11, but the terminal spat back: Access denied. You are no longer the Mod Master. I am. The loading bar was frozen at 99
She took a breath. Then she smiled that same wild smile.
