It began with a coffee cup.
After dinner, Chloe went to the bathroom. When she came out, the podcast had been replaced by Kind of Blue. Her blue mug was in the dishwasher. The garlic bread had been scraped into the trash.
The house, for the first time in two years, fell silent.
Martin went pale. “That was Elise’s.”
One night, she found the closet.
Every morning, Chloe placed her mug—a thick blue ceramic one—on the left side of the sink. Every afternoon, she found it in the dishwasher. Not the right side. The exact spot where Elise’s mug used to go.
“How was work, honey?”
