On the seventh replay, the square was empty except for the woman. She walked toward the camera until her face filled the 320x240 window. Pixelated, yes. But her eyes were clear. But the air felt colder

Kaelen backed away slowly. The wafer was still spinning. The woman’s face, frozen in 320x240 pixels, smiled—a patient, terrible smile.

Then Kaelen noticed the glitch. At the center of the square, a woman in a gray coat stood perfectly still. Everyone else moved around her like water around a stone. She faced the camera—the old security cam that had recorded this—and held up a white placard.
