It killed his faith and wore his face (in the form of the Man in Black, a smoke monster trapped by a dying mother goddess). The central conflict became stark: Jacob (the island’s god-like protector) versus his nihilistic brother. It was a battle of faith versus empirical evidence, order versus entropy. And then came season six. The final season introduced the “Flash-Sideways”—a purgatorial alternate reality where Oceanic 815 landed safely. Viewers were furious.
