By 2009, the name “The Band” was legally complicated. Following Rick Danko’s passing in 1999 and the fractured relationships left in the wake of The Last Waltz , the surviving members (Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm—before his own passing in 2012) were not speaking as a unit.
